  • Waffen-SS EM / NCO M42 field blouse marked 1376

    New
    €6,500.00

Waffen-SS M42 field blouse marked 1376 in excellent condition. The maker marking 1376 is a SS specific maker code which was a factory who also made uniforms for the Wehrmacht. The typical sewing behind the collar is rarely seen on several Heer M43 garments. The field blouse is not shortened or tailored, it is complete with its machine sewn BeVo sleeve eagle and several period sewn award loops. It seems the award loops correspond to the Nahkampfspange, EK1, ISA/PKA and wound badge. Additionally it retains the ribbons for the EK2 and Ostmedaille. Beautiful base for a restoration of your personal choice!

  • British Army document grouping to Jewish Palestinian volunteer Samuel Griess, RASC

    New
    €300.00

Interesting British Army document grouping to Driver Samuel Griess, service number PAL/32992, who served with the Royal Army Service Corps during the Second World War. The grouping includes his Soldier’s Service and Pay Book, discharge book for locally enlisted troops, separate discharge certificate, photographs, handwritten Morse alphabet, postwar correspondence and Belgian judo licence.

Griess was born on 29 June 1925 and enlisted at Sarafand, Palestine, on 27 May 1944. His service book records his religion as Jewish and his civilian occupation as agricultural labourer. The training entries include a driving and maintenance course at the RASC Base Depot and Training Centre, Middle East. His book records entitlement to the Italy Star and 1939–45 Star, whilst the separate discharge certificate lists the Italy Star and service outside Palestine amounting to one year and 349 days.

The documents retain various Palestine Training Depot and Palestine Record Office stamps, together with a B Company, 650 Company RASC, C.M.F. stamp dated April 1946. His discharge book records release leave commencing on 10 August 1946, with a Military Dispersal Unit, Rechovoth stamp dated 9 August. The separate certificate gives his effective discharge date as 4 October 1946 and assesses his military conduct as good. A handwritten testimonial describes him as an honest and hardworking man.

The later papers provide an interesting continuation of his story. A letter dated 2 September 1955 from the Combined Record Office in Bournemouth is addressed to him in Sydney, Australia. His Belgian judo licence for 1964–65 gives his full name as Samuel Charles Griess, records his nationality as Australian and lists an address in Liège. It also records his first dan qualification dated 9 October 1963.

The grouping also includes his Belgian Judo Federation licence for 1964–65, issued in the name of Samuel Charles Griess, born 29 June 1925. It records his Australian nationality, occupation as teacher and residence at 17 rue de Bex in Liège. The licence names his club as Judo Kodokan Liégeois and records his first dan qualification dated 9 October 1963. Together with the 1955 correspondence addressed to him in Sydney, this provides an interesting continuation of his documented postwar life in Australia and Belgium.

The service book is well used, with a worn binding, clipped page corners, staining and handling wear. The accompanying documents show folds, tears and age toning as photographed. An interesting personal grouping documenting a Jewish Palestinian volunteer’s service in the British Army, with additional material tracing his postwar life in Australia and Belgium. A nice set which deserves further research!

  • Belgian uniform factory Lustra Arbeits-Ausweis grouping to Jewish tailor David Wichenberg

    New

Interesting document grouping to David Wichenberg, a Polish Jewish tailor living in Brussels. The grouping consists of a German Arbeits-Ausweis issued in connection with Lustra S.A., his prewar Polish military certificate booklet and three accompanying portrait photographs.

The Arbeits-Ausweis names Wichenberg as a married Polish national, born in Warsaw on 29 October 1899 and residing at 67 rue Eloy, Brussels. His occupation is recorded as Schneider, with employee number 102 and Kennkarte number 25365. His wife, Dora Szajgold, born in Warsaw on 6 August 1899, is individually listed under Geschützte Angehörige, or protected dependants, with Kennkarte number 25364.

The printed text states that Lustra S.A., situated at 5 Gaucheretstraat in Brussels, worked exclusively for the German Wehrmacht manufacturing fur winter clothing. It further states that the named holder and dependants were exempt from measures connected with the current SD-Aktion, on the instructions of the representative of the Chief of the Sicherheitspolizei and SD for Belgium and Northern France. The document bears both the Lustra company stamp and an official Sicherheitspolizei and SD stamp with eagle and swastika. The photograph field is empty.

The Polish Zaświadczenie Wojskowe or military certificate names him as Dawid Wichenberg and explicitly records his religion as Jewish and his occupation as tailor. It contains Warsaw military administration and Polish consular entries from Brussels.

The accompanying photographs include a portrait dedicated by Joseph Leffton to the Wichenberg family. A significant personal grouping documenting a Jewish tailor’s administrative protection through employment supplying the Wehrmacht in occupied Belgium.

    • French Croix de Guerre des Théâtres d’Opérations Extérieurs (TOE)

    • French Croix du Combattant Volontaire

    • French Indochina Campaign Commemorative Medal

    • French Croix du Combattant

    • French Colonial Medal (Médaille d’Outre-Mer) and an “EXTRÊME-ORIENT” clasp

    • German Iron Cross 2nd Class (1939): Recognizable by the black cross with silver trim. The second image reveals the reverse side showing the 1939 date and the swastika. (Note: Its presence on a French medal bar alongside post-WWII medals like the Indochina Campaign Medal is highly anomalous for official uniform regulations.)

A short unit history of the unit in the time frame that Günther must have gotten these awards:

The *Corps Expéditionnaire Français en Extrême-Orient* (CEFEO) was the French expeditionary force deployed during the First Indochina War (1946–1954). By 1951, the conflict had developed into a full-scale war between the French Union forces and the communist-led Viet Minh under General Võ Nguyên Giáp. In early 1951, French forces fought several major battles in northern Vietnam, including Vĩnh Yên in January, Mạo Khê in March and the Battle of the Day River between May and June. Throughout 1952, heavy fighting continued in the Tonkin Delta and the surrounding mountainous regions, with major operations including Lorraine in October and November. In 1953, French forces continued their efforts to contain the Viet Minh, culminating in Operation Castor in November, during which French paratroopers occupied Điện Biên Phủ. This position became the scene of the decisive battle of the war, lasting from March until 7 May 1954, when the French garrison surrendered after prolonged fighting. Following the Geneva Agreements of July 1954, a ceasefire came into effect and French forces began withdrawing from northern Vietnam.

The recipient was decorated with the Croix de Guerre des Théâtres d’Opérations Extérieurs with bronze star, indicating a citation at regimental or brigade level, the Croix du Combattant Volontaire, the Croix du Combattant, the Médaille commémorative de la campagne d’Indochine and the Médaille Coloniale with Extrême-Orient clasp. These decorations reflect recognised combat service during the French campaign in Indochina, including an individual citation for distinguished conduct.

This is a very exciting and unique grouping that for sure would be a great addition to any French indochina collection and a great base for further research!
