Wehrpass grouping to ᛋᛋ Grenadier Horst Hartung 1. ᛋᛋ Pz. Gren. Rgt.Totenkopf
Wehrpass grouping to ᛋᛋ Grenadier Horst Hartung 1. ᛋᛋ Pz. Gren. Rgt.Totenkopf. His Erkennungsmarke was marked 1. SS-Geb.Jäg.Ers.Batl. “Nord”. He was born 25 January 1924 and was deemed fit for service 21.2.1942 and was pulled from the Reichsarbeitsdienst service two days later. 12.10 1942 he enlisted with the Waffen-SS. At Trautenau/Sudg. he entered 1. Kompanie ᛋᛋ-Gebirgsjäger Ersatz Bataillon Nord. One month later on 18.11.1942 he was transferred to 1.ᛋᛋ-Panzergrenadier Regiment 1 ‘Totenkopf’. He fell at 26.2.1943 with this unit at Jwanowka / Nowo Alexandrowka during the third battle for Kharkov. He was killed by multiple shrapnel pieces.
His Wehrpass was sent home to his family. My guess is when he tranferred to the Totenkopf unit he did not count on rejoining any other SS unit and sent them home prior. Additionally there is a original SS helmet decal on a piece of paper, three uniform photos of Horst and the photo of his grave. Most interestingly is the image where horst wears a custom made oakleaf field blouse with a zipper and large collar with tabs. Another photo shows him driving a captured British Bedford truck which is common to the TK in the French 1940 campaign. This is a great grouping that would be good further researched.
