He entered the war on 24 september 1940 with 1 Kompanie Pionier Bataillon 198. This unit fought with the 98 Infanterie Division. This division was destroyed on 10 may 1944 after heavy fighting over the Krim. It was posted as coastal defence in Italy. It fought at Rimini and later retreated to Pieve di Cadore where it surrendered.
