M31 messkit named Wilh. Schmidt Festung La Rochelle marked FWBN 37. This messkit belonged to Wilh. Schmidt who wrote his name on the messkit’s top and underneath the front handle. The top is decorated with a date of 1945 ‘La Rochelle’ which most probably denotes his date of capture at the Festung La Rochelle in France. This town was used as a fortress by the Germans and after the Allied landings in Normandy was bypassed. It was deemed to costly to take by force and the allies basicly laid siege on the city until surrender could be negotiated in 1945. This messkit is a nice and decorative piece!
