  • Soldbuch to Unteroffizier Hartjes, Artillerie Regiment 179, 79 VGD – Ardennes, Luxembourg, Eifel

    Soldbuch to Unteroffizier H. Hartjes. The Soldbuch was first filled in 26.8.39 when he enlisted with 2. Batterie Artillerie Regiment 11.  His battery was subsequently merged with 5. Batterie Artillerie Regiment 291 between July and August 1940. He was promoted to a Obergefreiter on 1.7.1940 serving with Artillerie Regiment 291. He was promoted to Unteroffizier on 1.12.1940 serving with Artillerie Regiment 306. After serving with this unit for some time he was sent to Artillerie Regiment 170 which was a new unit formed in may 1944. With him being hospitalised and healing he was enlisted with this newly formed unit. This unit was destroyed in the fighting for Walcheren, the Netherlands in November 1944. After this he was sent to Artillerie Regiment 179 right in time for the Ardennes Offensive.

    He was issued a number of interesting uniform and equipment pieces under which;

    Tragegestell or carrying frame
    Tarnnetz or helmet net
    Pelzweste or Fur winter vest
    Knee warmers
    Felt in lay soles
    Mapcase
    Greatcoat
    Gasmask size 3

    He was issued many different weapons of which 1 rifle and 3 different pistol including one Belgian.

    He was wounded 3 times;
    15.6.44 wound code 18 indicating Pneumonia, hospitalised at Feldlazerett (Motorisiert) 5 Luftwaffe
    1.4.44 wound code 31a indicating bulletwounds, hospitalised in Kriegslazarett Belgrad
    6.9.44 wound code 31u(is probably a) indicating bulletwounds, hospitalised in Reserve Lazarett II Olmuss Teillazerett Pöttingeum which is a Neo Gothic style school building in Olomouc, Czech. During the war this was used as a Feldlazarett.

    He was awarded the Iron Cross second class on 26.1.1943. He was awarded the black wound badge on 8.9.44.

    His last furlough was granted on 20.10.44 and lasted 7 days indicating he was back with his unit 27th of October.
    Prior to the Ardennes offensive he was drafted in Artillerie Regiment 179 which was a part of the 79 Volksgrenadier Division during the Ardennes offensive. His unit fought in the Ardenes at Vianden, Bourscheid and later retreated to the Westwall. Early in 1945 it fought hard battles with US divisions in Germany. The soldbuch would be a good base for further research!

    Textbook ‘Coconut’ canteen marked HRE 41 in excellent condition. Nice variant with Lux marked straps which are far less common then SHB marked variants. First year of production flask dated 1941 and matching aluminium cup marked HRE 41. Nice example that would be hard to upgrade!

    A very rare tropical Gasplane in unissued/mint condition complete with its original pouch. The gasplane is nicely marked pcd. Ope indicates Oppanol : a transparent versatile polymer, impervious to water and many different gases and resistant to chemicals. (Tp/Ark) indicates these where made for Tropical or Arctic use. One of the rarest gascapes to find!

    Nice carrying case for the 7/10X50 binoculars or Dienstglas made out of black coloured Pressstoff. The case is nicely marked Walter Winkler 1942. The case is missing the cushions on the inside but is complete with the virtually always missing carrying strap. Nice example!

    Textbook last ditch manufactured M42 canteen in good, used condition. The red painted steel flask itself is nicely marked sku 45 (Late war 3-letter code for MN) which indicates production by Menesa Metallindustrie GmbH. Neunkirchen-Saar in 1945! The canteen features a typical late war gabardine cover and the way the carbine hook is attached inside out is a typical late war feature as well. Typical last ditch example in configuration with a black phenolic resin (bakelite) cup!

    A nice partial (only the left side) 6×30 Dienstglas or binoculars manufactured out of Bakelite. The binoculars are nicely marked cxn which indicates production by Emil Busch A.-G., Rathenow. These Bakelite binoculars  were produced to reduce the usage of metal in the production process and are rare late war production! This Dienstglas most likely broke in the field and has been modified to a monocular. The lower ring and screws are missing but the other parts for this side are all there! Nice and interesting example which can be displayed or used as is or used for its often damaged parts!

The scabbard has a probable wartime repaint which can easily be removed by scratching with a fingernail or piece of wood. The bayonet has never been sharpened or reblued. This is a very nice bayonet to display as is, or clean the scabbard to further improve it.

    This Lico Wirtschaftkasten was one of the most luxuous pieces of private purchase pocket litter. This set was commonly gifted to sons going to war, bought by officers or bought at barracks stores. This kit basicly had all the items a soldier would need to keep clean and organised. The Mica is a basic set of period personal items and was designed to fit inside the M31 messkit. This Lico type is the Reichswehr variant which fits in the higher pre war messkit. There are a number of wartime small pocket litter items inside but the toothbrush is a in my opinion a reproduction item, but it adds to the display so I will leave it with the case. Nice example in good condition!

    Battledamaged Italian camouflaged M33 helmet in as found, attic found condition. Unlike most if not all of these ‘relics’ this one was kept inside and was not left to rot in the ground. This is a interesting relic of a Italian M33 helmet which suffered many shrapnel and bullet damages. The helmet retains a portion of its original liner. The helmet retains portions of its wartime applied brown and green camouflage pattern.

    Tall M38 gasmask set with field applied Feldgrau paint named Obergefreiter Imm 42931. The gasmask set is in good used condition and is complete with all parts. The straps retain their leather reinforcements. The feldpostnummer 42931 indicates a barrage balloon unit but was later reissued to Artillerie Regiment 136 late in 1944, serving with the 16 Volksgrenadier Division during the Ardennes offensive. Beautiful set, nice for further research!

    Typical short M38 canister dated 1937. It was first issued in the typical pre war green colour and was repainted with a brush applied dark green colour when the war progressed. It retains its pre war straps with leather reinforcements. The mask is a nice A1B variant with 1937 dated filter. The mask and the canister retain the same number. Nice used set!

The map shows the upper left portion of the Ardennes region and the south of the Netherlands. The map shows a large portion of the Meuse river which was one of the tactical goals for the Germans. The Sprimont, Maastricht and Heerlen area is also well visible on the map. The mapcase is in good used condition and is complete with carrying strap.

    A extremely rare light brown coloured leather P38 holster in real combat worn condition. The light brown leather coloured holster is faintly but still readable marked gxy 1944 which indicates production by Gebr. Klinge, Lederwarenfabrik, Dresden-Loebtau. The holster is nicely named with a Kopiërstift which was often used to name or mark equipment but sadly it’s unreadable. If you’re looking for a real combat worn light brown leather and rare holster intended for the P38, this is it!
