M31 Breadbag – Heer – Prewar pattern
The breadbag or “m31 Brotbeutel” was one of the most integral parts in the individual Wehrmacht soldiers equipment. It contained mainly ration items and next to that it held the canteen and the messkit. It is a single compartment equipment sack and it closes with leather straps and buttons. The early versions have mostly aluminium hardware and leather reinforcements on the carrying loops. As the war progressed “luxurious” details like this where omitted. A lot of variations exist and one could easily start a specialized collection with breadbags only.
Leather: Gray painted leather
Notes: This is the typical prewar pattern breadbag for the Heer. It features aluminium hardware and gray painted leather. The belt loops have reinforcement sewn on them. The breadbag is named in purple Kopierstift, or copying pencil to “Euler” with the Feldpostnumber 21371 which corresponds to (Mobilisation-1.1.1940) 1. Feldlazarett Armee-Sanitats-Abteilung 582 and later (19.7.1941-14.2.1942) 1. Feldlazarett 582. The breadbag has many period repairs.
