Mapcase – 0/0833/0007
The mapcase was a item most often related to non- and commissioned officers in the field. Truth is many other functions and ranks wore these pouches containing all sorts of paperwork. “Melders” or messengers in the field, truck- and motorcycle drivers utilized mapcases. The german army had a few varieties in mapcases in different colours. The mapcase could contain anything from maps to pencils, from the famous “Duckungswinkelmesser” to a wide variety of map plotting rulers.

Notes: This is a latewar variant of the mapcase. The mapcase still has it’s original contents and a bullet/shrapnel hole that went through all of them.
Inside the case a variety of items can be found; Pencils, manuals, a map and a “Meldeblock”. The items belong to the pouch!
A notebook in the mapcase has the names of all the members of 3-4 gruppen. The mapcase belonged to a Hauptmann of Grenadier Ersatz Battalion 414 which is a part of the 209 infantry division. One of the pages has the following writing, a standardized letter describing the heroic death of a soldier meant to send to family members on said occasions.
I. d. (In der) Schlacht (Gefecht usw.) bei …. am … fiel Ihr Sohn (Bruder usw.) Vorname Zuname im Kampf um die Freiheit Großdeutschlands in sold. (soldatischer) Pflichterfüllung, getreu seinem Fahneneide für Führer, Volk u. (und) Vaterland.
Zugl. (Zugleich) im Namen seiner Kameraden spreche ich Ihnen meine wärmste Anteilnahme aus. Die Komp. (Kompanie) (usw.) wird Ihrem Sohn (usw.) stets ein ehrendes (?) Andenken bewahren u. (und) in ihm ein Vorbild sehen.
Die Gewißheit, daß Ihr Sohn (usw.) für die Größe u. (und) Sicherheit (?) unseres ewigen deutschen (?) Volkes sein Leben hingab, möge Ihnen in dem schw. (schweren) Leid, das Sie betroffen hat, Kraft geben u. (und) Ihnen ein Trost sein.
